The workshop is jointly organized by two projects within the research center "Media Upheavals" (SFB/FK 615) at the University of Siegen, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
The film historical project "Industrialization of Perception" (A5) deals with German cinema history up to 1914. In the first three years of the project, a couple of databases were developed which are now important tools to make a statistical analysis of itinerant and stationary cinemas and the film programmes shown in the latter. Currently, these databases are made ready for publication on the Internet. At the same time, the team is analyzing contemporary films, which is partly done with the help of analysis software.
The informatics project has been working on technical methods of organizing heterogenous data, which have been turned into practical use for a database for the projects within the Siegen Research Center. Apart from that, the project has been doing ground research on the analysis of audiovisual data and has developed a software for film analysis. Currently, both fields of research are continued with special emphasis on the development on a shared network of data and ressources ("media grid").
